What is a Managed Services Provider?

by Mike Ricotta - February 13, 2020

There are a lot of terms and phrases to learn in the IT field: Hosting Provider, Integrated Solutions, DevOps, CI/CD, Managed Services Provider, and many others. While we could write a post on each of these (maybe we will…), Managed Services is something we are getting a lot of questions about and something we have been wanting to talk about.

So… What is a Managed Services Provider? It is a term that can cover many parts of Tech, which causes confusion. We break down what Managed Services represents, how it is different from other terms used, and how Arcane provides these services to our clients.

Definition

Managed Services is the practice of proactively outsourcing certain parts of an organization’s operations to reduce costs. While this definition can cover various parts of a business, it usually focuses on these parts: Information services, Supply chain services, or Marketing services.

Here at Arcane Strategies, we focus on the Information Services group. This includes tasks like Networking or Cloud Infrastructure (check out our Managed Cloud Services today!), Security and Support, Data Analytics, Software Production/Maintenance, and more. Again, these can change from provider to provider or client to client but these are the usual suspects. In this context, Managed Services simply means that your infrastructure service provider isn’t simply handling the raw infrastructure, it is also “managing” that infrastructure for you, so you don’t have to.

Managed Services Is Different Than…

  • DevOps: This is the term most confused with Managed Services. The goal of DevOps is to increase the harmony between Development and Operations (Dev-Ops). While DevOps can be part of a services package they are not interchangeable.
  • Web Services: As with the above example Web Services can be part of your Managed Services Solution. Web Services are typically different ways for users (customers or workers) to interact with a Web-based tool/service. This can be in the form of a website or app and usually involve a platform or custom code.
  • Hosting Provider: These are platforms in which you can host resources on the web. Some hosting providers offer Managed Services as add ons to their hosting services.
